The 9th grade class made Shakespearean masks as an artifact in their gang colors for their Romeo and Juliet unit! They are competing against two other groups in their class from the play in several competitions, this being just one. The three gangs are the Capulets (red and yellow), Veronians (neon pink and yellow), and the Montagues (blue and green). Each member created masks and the strongest mask from each gang faces off in a competition judged by dignitaries of South Prairie School.

The students learned that the use of masks during Shakespeare’s plays were for purposes of flirtation for the young people, for fashion of the time, and to protect the wealthy from the sun. Some of the masks will be donated to children’s theatre groups or the 2nd Story Social Club for their annual prom!
